A Love Letter to Yourself

Comedian Drew Carey’s ex-fiance, Amie Harwick, was allegedly murdered on Valentine’s Day 2020 by an ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse. Amie Harwick case: Blood, a broken necklace and a poison-filled syringe are evidence in Hollywood therapist’s violent death – CBS News. Although Harwick had a restraining order against Pursehouse, he pursued her and allegedly completed this deadly act on the day most celebrate their love towards another.

Valentine’s Day is a day where people extend expressions of love to others. This day can be a trigger to some and can lead to depressive thoughts and other inappropriate acts. It shouldn’t be a day where some are depressed because they do not have a special someone or they have a special someone, and they still do not receive a gift.

Instead, document or think about the pleasant things that have occurred in your life as a love letter to yourself. Extend this expression by doing something special for yourself that will remind you just how amazing you are to God and the world. For example, in this photo, I purchased the lounge dress with the money I received for Christmas without realizing a heart embossed on the chest. When I pulled it out, I smiled because I now have a new tradition to wear this lounge dress sometime before or during Valentine’s Day.

A pleasant thought for me is as a girl, my parents set the atmosphere to celebrate us. Their expressions of love demonstrated to us that love comes in many forms. Momma would decorate the house prepare a special meal and give gifts. And daddy would come in with a box of chocolates for us and something special for momma. Now that they are no longer here with me on earth, still today, I decorate and feel good on Valentine’s Day, whether I have someone special or not.

Please don’t allow a co-worker’s bouquet from her fiancé or your classmate’s bouquet of balloons to throw your life into a tailspin. Instead, take it in and don’t allow the thought that you are not loved because you did not receive anything to infiltrate your spirit.

Let’s get real! If we did not have a special someone on February 13, why are we stressing out and depressed on February 14? Don’t allow a day to define you. Remind yourself that you are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” And live to see another day!

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well,” Psalm 139:14 (KJV).
